WORKSHOP: Landscape painting from photography to pastels

Painting based on your own photographs offers advantages, but also has its pitfalls. In this two-day workshop, Nov. 22-23, 2014 with award-winning artist Colette Odya Smith, we will explore ways to use photography as a tool to serve your vision and memory without becoming a slave to what the camera saw.

Colette will offer examples and demonstrations to get you inside her techniques and thought process as she goes from the original photo inspiration to the finished painting. Through group and individual discussion and critiques, you will learn how to take better photos, assess their usefulness, choose your specific approach and develop your finished paintings. There will also be plenty of time for individual work.

See below for details. If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne by e-mail at, or call  262-725-6131.

WHEN: Sat, Nov. 22, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

President's Newsletter November 7, 2012

Hello Everyone,

Here it is, November and not only has our Country’s voice been heard but you as a member of the WPA will get the opportunity to elect your new Board of Directors, next week Wednesday, November 14th, 6:30 pm at Artist and Display.  After the elections, we will be having a show and tell so please bring one or two of your works that you would like to talk about.  I look forward to seeing them.

It has been not only my pleasure but a great honor to serve you as President for the last 5 years.  As I informed you 2 years ago, the time has come for me to step down and turn the reins of this wonderful group of artists over to new blood.  Our group has certainly gone through growing pains, learning curves and great friendships have blossomed.  The art work produced by this group is a true testament to the growth we have all attained through this artistic fellowship.  I certainly look forward to seeing what the next 2 years and beyond will bring for our organization.

With our elections still to be decided, these are the positions that are open for election.

Vice President

One appointed position - Membership Chair

It is very important that we have these offices filled.  These positions insure our group’s continued membership in IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies).  So, please, if you would like to hold an office here is your chance to do so.

With this final note about the elections, I hope these newsletters have kept you informed and well posted.  Again, it has been my pleasure to have served as your President for these past years.

See you Wednesday.

One way to price your artwork

Hi Dear Friends,

How I often figure out what to charge for a piece is:

  • Figure out square inches.      13 x 18= 234.
  • Then I take the square inches and multiply them by 0.70 cents =$163.80.
  • That's the price for the canvas,
  •  I then add on the cost of the frame and the cost of supplies, I then have the final price.
  •  This is not a hard and fast rule but a good generalization,
  • I picked 0.70cents because in one of my art books it was suggested as a good price per inch for a moderate price.
I hope I explained this clearly( I don't often describe how to do any math) and that it helps you.
Personally, there are many times I do price lower than that
